Becca is a twenty-four-year old Senior Campaign Manager based in London. She has been working in the Social Media Marketing Industry for nearly three years.

How did you get into your field? What inspired you?

‘I always wanted to work within an industry that was new and exciting! I found the influencer space, something that people were still learning about and it was newly becoming such a huge part of brand marketing. I applied for an internship and was employed after 3 months becoming the 6th member of the company.’

What did you study at university and did this help you get into your field?

‘I studied BA Geography at The University of Nottingham. This didn't directly helped me get into my field but what I loved about studying Geography was that it was so broad and I particularly enjoyed learning about human behaviours which I think I have carried through to my current role. I think University teaches you more than just your degree, the life lessons I learnt have definitely benefited me in my work!’

Do you recommend any particular studies, courses or degrees for your field?

‘Within the marketing industry I don't think what you studied necessarily matters. To show you have an interest in learning and have studied at University is definitely a bonus but not a requirement. I would advise everyone to study what they love and figure the rest out later!’

What does an average day look like in your role?

‘My average day will be liaising with my current clients and working on the social media campaigns we are running with them. This could range from any part of the campaign, from finding the right influencers to match with their brand, communicating and briefing the creators or producing a campaign wrap-up report. I also manage two campaign managers so I check in with them regularly and help them if needs be!’

What is the best part of your role?

‘Working with such an array of interesting brands makes every day exciting, these could be clothing brands, apps or food and drink brands. I also love meeting new people whether that be clients, agents or content creators. One thing that attracted me to the role was the rewarding feeling when a campaign is a success and you have something to show for it. I'm someone who likes to have a goal or a project and once one job is done another begins!’

What is the worst part of your role?

‘As my role relies on many people from different angles of the business, sometimes hiccups can happen unexpectedly which can set things back slightly. However, it's overcoming problems that ultimately make you better in your role. The start-up way of life has sometimes been stressful and crazy but so exciting at the same time!’

How important is work/life balance to you and how much spare time do you have?

‘Work/life balance is very important! I make sure once I leave the office that I leave my work head there also. I have to remind myself sometimes that nothing is the end of the world and most things can be sorted with a fresh mind in the morning. I like to get into the office before my team so I can get my head down and then I can enjoy my evening plans. I am also very lucky that some of my best friends are from work so everyday is fun...although we have to keep that balance in the office also...haha’

Do you have any hobbies?

‘I like to run, although I do go through phases with this. Even though, it's not really a hobby I also love music and listening to music or attending dance/fitness classes is something that makes me feel happiest. I also go to the theatre as much as I can!’

Do you have any advice for people looking to start a career in the same field?

‘My advice for someone starting out within the social media industry would be to apply to loads of internships, as a lot of the companies are up and coming they usually offer internships and it's a great way to get your foot in the door early and learn all aspects of the business. I would also say as the industry is always changing and developing staying up to date with industry news is very important.’

Have you ever experienced any uncertainties about your career? What did you do to overcome them?

‘When I first left university I thought I wanted to be a teacher, I have always loved working with children and teenagers. Part of me felt like this was something I saw myself doing at a later stage in life but as I didn't have any other clear path I applied to do the PGCE aged 21. In the months leading up to the course starting I took my internship at Influencer and found that I really wanted to work in a young company in the buzz of central London whilst I was young. I subsequently turned down the course although I would never write off teaching as my career one day, but for now I am happy!’

Who is your biggest female inspiration and why?

‘My biggest female inspiration is my best friend Sylvia (NHS Doctor). She is the wisest, most giving person I have ever met and has never complained when life has set her back in any way....and of course Queen Bey!’
