Pooja is a twenty-two-year-old Graduate in Energy and Services from London. She has been working in the industry for nearly a year.

How did you get into your field? What inspired you?

‘I’ve been interested in the energy industry since a very young age. It is a very relevant, topical industry to be in and I’m very interested in the science behind it. I also have parents and siblings in the industry.

What did you study at school at university and did this help you get into your field?

‘I studied Physics at university. It helped to develop my interest in the field as many of the modules available were centred around energy and renewable energy.’

Do you recommend any particular studies, courses or degrees for your field?

‘It depends on which part of the sector you would like to get involved in - finance, law, commercial or engineering for example. However a basic scientific understanding of how energy is generated and it’s global effects (renewable and non-renewable) would be beneficial.’

What does an average day look like in your role?

‘It changes hugely day to day. Some days I’ll be on site visiting nuclear power stations, other days I can be sat behind a desk working on research projects or excel spreadsheets - but since I’m only a few months into the grad scheme, the majority of what I’m doing is learning and absorbing as much as possible!’

What is the best part of your role?

‘Site visits - I really enjoy getting out from behind a desk and visiting new sites and working environments.’

What is the worst part of your role?

‘I’m not always busy, but that’s mainly due to the fact that I’m still new to the job.’

How important is work/life balance to you and how much spare time do you have?

‘Work/life balance is very important to me. In my opinion, I have just the right amount of free time - I’m able to get home in the evenings early enough for me to go to the gym, relax are attend any social activities planned.’

Do you have any hobbies?

‘I go to the gym and I like reading.’

Do you have any advice for people looking to start a career in the same field?

‘If you have a genuine interest in the field, it’ll show through during your application process!’

Who is your biggest female inspiration?

‘My sister!’
